I dress my 18 month old in what I consider to be nice clothes. (I’m not talking labels here, just pleasant looking high street clothes). I like buying him funky little outfits that are like miniature versions of what you might see on a teenager or adult. Never anything inappropriate, and I would never ever put aesthetics over comfort, all of his clothes are perfectly comfortable.

I’ve read a few people being criticised for this sort of thing before and I’ve had a couple of doses of it myself. For example, the other day there was a question about favourite outfits for your child or something, so I said my favourite clothes that he has are his four black rock bodysuits (of various bands), that he wears with jeans as t-shirts on warmer days. They look so cute in my opinion, but some people are of the opinion that it’s terrible to put black clothes on babies. I also said that I also liked it when he wears a pair of jeans and a white button up shirt (not a stiff ’smart’ shirt or anything, just a day shirt). Out of all the answers, I was the only one to receive thumbs downs.

I also had a comment the other day – he was wearing a deep pink and navy blue polo shirt – it was from the BOYS section and isn’t a girly style at all, despite the main colour being the pink. I’ve always thought boys look nice in pink, it’s the only pink thing he owns, and he isn’t old enough to get teased for it so I don’t see the problem. He was wearing it with a pair of light coloured jeans that were held up with a [necessary] belt (otherwise they fall down – he is thin and tall) – and the belt is black and white chequered like you see some teenage boys wearing. Obviously that outfit wouldn’t be everybody’s cup of tea but I think he looked gorgeous and as I said, he’s too young for being teased – I’ll stick to spiderman tops and whatnot when he’s older I’m sure! But anyway we were at a play centre and a bitchy woman actually came over to me and asked is that your kid and proceeded to tell me I was pathetic for dressing him in trendy clothes and that I must be very shallow. Please note I had done NOTHING to her, she just came over to me and said that off her own back! Her children were all wearing clothes resembling pyjamas, but I wouldn’t dream of judging her for it!

Why do some people have an issue with it? I could understand if I was putting him in really tight or stiff or uncomfortable outfits. But they’re no less comfortable than anything, they simply look ‘fashionable’. I by no means think it’s important, and I’d dress him in a sweatsuit in a minute if I thought it would make him any happier. But when it makes no difference to him – what exactly is the problem? Why would I walk into a shop and buy something I prefer less when it is no more comfortable and no more advantageous to him? Does this really make me shallow?

Oh there just jealous, screw them!!!!!!

What’s wrong with black or pink? My son wears both! I like pink on boys to, it’s not like it was a girly shirt. My son has like three of the shirts you were talking about. One is brown and pink stripes, one is blue and pink stripes and the other is something and pink. They are all polos and he looks so cute in them. He also wears his with cute blue jeans and a belt. And my son is 5 and he wore these outfits to pre-k alot last year and no one ever made fun of him!

And no you don’t look shallow : )

Okay, I’m looking for a variety of online baby clothing stores. I don’t want to buy the traditional Walmart or other department store onesies etc, if you know what I mean.

I’m looking for really unique and hip, kind of "sophisticated" baby clothing. I hope you get what I mean, I want her to be dressed in trendy clothing, that perhaps doesn’t look like traditional and cheap baby clothes. I’m kind of going for a more sophisticated and more expensive wardrobe with FEWER pieces, than the normal baby wardrobe, which has many many clothes that are rather cheap cost wise.

I don’t mind if it’s branded or not, but preferably not too expensive, probably less than $50 per piece, depending on what it is.

Thank you so much…
I’m actually a fashion major, so I do know how to sew. I was actually just creating a cute little outfit yesterday, so I do know that sewing is a great idea, and it does save a lot of money!

As for the $50, it’s just a general idea, but we would like to stay around that price range. I would say we could spend about $150 to $200 on a few items, perhaps a designer labelled dress and coat for special occasions, so Saks Fifth Avenue would be great for that. But I doubt we could afford an entire wardrobe at that price…

Thanks everyone so far.

I think your best bet for buying sophisticated baby clothing is a high end department store like Barneys or Saks Fifth Avenue, although I doubt you’ll find many items under your $50 budget. Everything else tends to be pretty generic. My sister’s friend, Gina, actually just started making her own baby clothes. Gina had a similar goal, to have her infant daughter look as stylish as she does when they were out, but she couldn’t find a good source for unique clothes. She checked out this website:
http://9b18fgn2q8ndjaf77zz3z95va2.hop.clickbank.net/
and learned how to sew her own baby clothes. Now her daughter is as stylish as her fashion savvy mother, and she’s not a full time tailor, but she’s fixed up a couple pairs of pants and zippers for me. If you don’t know how to sew, I encourage you to try; it’s not as hard as I’d imagined, and Gina claims the books she bought paid for themselves with all the money she’s saved making her daughter’s clothes.

Good luck.

I am due February 24th. My husband and I opted for our baby’s gender to be a surprise, so we do not know if we are having a boy or a girl! It’s been sort of tough because I have had to buy gender-neutral clothing, toys, etc. Anyways, we haven’t been the coo-coo-baby-name parents…until now! Time is running out and I’ve no idea what to name our child!

We both settled on a brief list of names that we like, but are open to suggestions. In terms of that, we do not like off the wall, made up sounding names like Aidan, Pax, etc. We also do not care for overly trendy names such as Ashley, Lindsay and Emma.

In the case of a daughter:

1. Rory (alternative spellings are options)
2. Zoie(alternative spellings are options)
3. Catrina (similar to my own name, Trina)
4. Blake
5. Sable (family name, no alternative spellings please)
6. Irina
7. Elena (family name, no alternative spellings please)
8. Rebekah (family name, no alternative spellings please)
9. Alisabeth (a nice change from E-lizabeth)
10. Bristol (alternative spellings are options)

If a boy:
1. Michael (family name, no alt. spellings please)
2. Evander (alternative for popular Alexander)
3. Eli (family name, no alt. spellings please)
4. Jack (family name, no alt. spellings please)
5. Trenton (sort of popular, but I love it)
6. Chase (sort of popular, but I love it)
7. Marak (pronounced Mare-eck, love it!)
8. Dawson
9. Fadem
10. Jedadiah

For a girl, I love the names : Rory. but spelled Rorie.. and Blake.
For a boy : Eli, and Jack.
(Jackson, but called Jack is very cute)

I like lovely Japanese street style and anything that looks trendy. My usual style is just jeans and t-shirts although I want to be more stylish and look girlish. Any suggestions of stores (preferably ones with websites) that must be based in the north east asia would be greatly appreciated. I’m particularly interested in knowing about baby doll dress, pretty style t-shirts, flat shoes etc. I’d love to find a nice jeans also. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

actually I want to look my age because everyone says I look older. I am 13 years old and in 8th grade. frequently I get mistaken for being in college or high school. and once I got asked if that kid in my lap is mine (I was babysitting my cousin’s baby in a ski lodge while she was skiing). Someone thought I was my dad’s wife once. I also get hit on by guys way too old for me. Its awkward and I would really like to look my age.
I try to stay away from trendy clothes (meaning I don’t wear abercrombie and fitch or aeropostale) and I always wear make-up. I am tall but never wear heels unless with a dress and I rarely wear those.
So any ideas?? I would really appreciate it
my make up is natural ish for the most part. light, neutral shadow, thin top lid only liner, and little mascara. hint of foundation and no lipstick or gloss

Try wearing your hair in pigtails or braids. Also don’t wear much makeup, try to keep it a natural look. If you have bigger boobs try wearing a sports bra and t-shirts, then your boobs wont look as big so you won’t look as mature. Try looking at pictures of kids your age and mimicking the kind of clothes they wear. Oh, make sure you wear sunscreen too. It will protect your skin and hopefully keep it looking young.

Okay, so I have yet to see an actual working relationship between a woman and a much older man.
I have a good reason to, though. During the 80’s my aunt was accosted while leaving her work by man on a motorbike who’s 24 years old. It just so happens that my aunt was 13. He knew this but was so taken by this girl’s trendy clothes and how they made her look so ‘grown up’ that he soon courted and married her within 6 months. But then he expected her to become a proper housewife within a snap of his fingers, and whenever she failed to cook or clean anything he slapped her around until she finally left him when he became to weak from his crack abuse.

Now, as a history grad, I keep noticing that plenty of men in history, when faced with the need or want to marry again, they go for much younger females than themselves. And they’ll keep hunting for much younger ones each time they do so. Even if they happened to be 60 and dropping bits and pieces they still search for women in their teens.
And let’s not forget the amount of men actively going for child prostitutes even in 19th c. England simply because they’re ‘clean’.
Doesn’t it even bother anyone that they’d be trying to get into the pants of a girl much younger than even their baby sister? Why exactly do grown men start looking for younger females to date and have sexual relations with them?
I’ve heard of nostlagia but that’s a pretty ridiculous enough reason when the girl has got to do some growing up first. So what convinces a guy to just waltz up towards a girl who probably wasn’t even born when he was in his 20s, or even just had her first period or training bra, and consider her okay enough to sleep with?

Probably because they would be easier to control.
They could be trying to "recapture" their youth–the younger the girl, the younger they feel.
They could just be attracted to little girls. There are young girls who are attracted to older men, in their thirties or forties.

Way back when, I’d say it was largely due to the fact that girls were considered an economic and financial liabilites to their families (with no rights, and unable to inherit property), so they got rid of their daughters as soon as possible.

In today’s time, you don’t see that much anymore, because women aren’t really liabilities. So then it’s just the nature of men determining the age of their wives. Some may be attracted to the young and innocent thing.

Hope that helps.
