I want to start buying baby clothes, but I have no idea where to start?

Posted under Buying Baby Clothes by admin on Thursday 11 March 2010

This is my first baby, I’m due to give birth in early July. I really want to start buying baby clothes now, but all I can find are thick winter layers. Obviously in the height of summer these won’t be necessary, but I’m actually unsure of what things TO buy when summer things eventually come into store?

Also, what kind of things should my baby sleep in during the summer? What about booties, are they even needed, or should I just buy socks?

Interested to hear from mothers who’ve had their babies in the summer, and what they bought. Thank you :)

i had my baby july 15th 09. really the only things you need for the first 3 months or so is baby vests, babygrows and 2 or 3 outfits! i wish someone told me this before i had my daughter because i spent a small fortune on lots of cute outfits and they didnt even get worn lol! i got cute little summer dresses, dungarees (sp) and cardigans. my baby is almost 8 months now and still has never worn shoes, just socks or tights! if your in u.k then matalan and mothercare have already got great clothes ready for the summer! good luck and congrats!

oh and to sleep in just a baby vest and light blankets if its really hot, but i always put her in a vest and babygrow just in case she got too cool. babies need one extra layer than what an adult needs!

hope ive helped!

  1. I found the best items to be cotton ones Still buy a few vests you may still need them. You will still need baby gros etc just remember that babies usually need one extra layer to you.

  2. I just bought a couple of onsies, vests and sleepers. At home he was mainly in a vest and a diaper. If we went somewhere, I would put on a onsie and walk with a blanket just in case it got cold (like an air-conditioned place). If you want, a short pants to put over the onsie… but I only started doing that when he got older (3 months). The sleepers were for night, since they really do like it warm and I never swaddled my LO. If you are going to swaddle, then maybe your LO should sleep in something lighter.
Get a hat to (1) protect against the sun in the day and (2) to protect against the cold at nights. Babies lose most heat through their heads. I think that socks are better than booties any day. Also do not buy too many since they outgrow the clothes quickly.

  4. First don’t buy too uch as babies grow very quickly, like 3 sizes in as many months. I have had 3 summer babies and we got along with legless bodysuits during the days at home and if we went out I would pop a pair of shorts over the bottom. Aside from this we had a couple of ‘Good’ outfits for Church and events. Babies acctually do not need alot of help in keeping warm. Afterall their normal body temperature is already a couple of degrees higher than ours. If you overdress your baby they will become uncomfortable and irritable and may even develop a heat rash.
I agree that socks are the way to go for summer(even though mine always kicked them off!) and I would definantly recomend a pair of mittens. Why? because babies nails can be very sharp, they grow quickly and are not the easiest to cut. Add on top a babies reflex to wipe their face and wave their arms about and you end up with a little scratched up bub.
Save bying all the fancy stuff for when your baby is bigger 6-12mths and their growing has slowed a bit.

  5. I would really stick to the essentials like gowns, onesies, socks, mittens etc. Keep in mind, babies don’t have good circulation. There hands are ALWAYS cold so I would keep a little blanket on him or her.

  6. Lots of onsies! Mittens, socks, bibs, shorts, coton pants, cute summer dresses! Hat to keep the sun off baby’s face in case you go out!
