This is really up to you and your budget. You obviously want to have enough clothes to always have something clean and cute available but you don’t need to buy an entire new closet full of clothes every few months either. Find yourself a reasonably priced online baby clothing store such as http://www.babywillows.com and pick out a few outfits every couple of months. It should keep your child in adorable baby clothes that are appropriate for the season and the baby’s size without hurting your budget.

Just get sleepers, believe me it will be a waste of money to buy clothes until they are able to crawl and walk. My daughter grew so fast I gave all her newborn clothes away to my friend who was pregnant. She only wore them once and some were new.

Just another tip, we shop ahead. We are buying for next winter now while stuff is on clearance. If baby seems to be growing faster then just get stuff that you could supplement with. You know they could wear long sleeves from oct to march at least so you couldn't go wrong there or with pants. And same for summer and short sleeves.

Definitley do not stock up on clothing for a newborn. Precisely b/c as you said they grow so fast, majority of the time, so much to most of the clothing will go stored and ununsed, which would be a great waste of money that could be a contribution to the diaper fund you will need instead it will be a space buster.
Also, you may want to wait until after your baby shower before you buy most of these things especially like clothing b/c I’m sure you will recieve more than is needed from your guest there.
I am a two time mom, Both the same sex, and I had told all the guest for my second shower that I had so many clothes that I wasnt going to need many at all for the shower b/c they were all unseable (mainly b/c they were season appropriate to his birth) well each guest gave me in addition to other gifts at least 1-2 outfits each. As we continued opening the gifts they all said well you told us you didnt many so I thought no one else would get you any at all. So.. Needless to say I had to worry about storage for all of these, and ended up giving out wonderful ones as gifts to friends that were expecting.
So be weary of over doing it for clothing. I would say that a nice outfit for first pictures, a few dresses if you are expecting a girl, Sleepers( The ones that zip are great ), Onesies, and about 6 other outfits ranging u to 6 months are plenty. You also can base this on how often you will need outfits for pictures for the first year, and special occasions.

Go according to age AND season. They will need about 15 outfits for each age & season. That is a minimum. Don’t go crazy on 0-3 month clothes, my baby was in 6 month clothes by the time she was 2 months old. Always make sure you have a couple warmer things as well even if it’s warm at the time since weather can fluctuate. Get about 4 sleep sacks so that when the baby is a newborn you don’t have to put blankets on him/her because of the risk of sids. I found that my baby lived in onesies in the summer time, and in long p.j. type warm footies in the colder months. She’s 9 months old now, and I never put her in jeans because they just aren’t comfortable and it’s easier to change them when they’re in one piece outfits. I always put socks on my baby’s feet under her long onesie footed p.j.’s because her feet felt cold if I didn’t.

Do you have any close friends that have had a baby in the last year or so? If so, they are more than likely to give you some of their clothes – and when I mean some, I mean you won’t really need to go on a major shopping spree for baby clothes – My wife and I have received boxes upon boxes of free clothes for our little boy who is to arrive in April – we’ve only bought a few outfits to this point and don’t expect to buy many more

I think you shoul just take it month by month. Kids grow up fast, some quicker than others. Just make sure you have enough money to by the baby more clothes once he/she grows ouy of them. I have 3 of my own and every month we had to buy them new clothes. It's only my opinion.

I'd have about six to eight onesies, ten sleepers, and only a couple of outfits for each stage. They'll be in sleepers most of the time and if they outdrool one, they will need another. It all depends on how often you do laundry. If you do laundry daily or every other day, then half as much would be fine.

If you are having a baby shower...wait to buy anything! Make sure you have 7-8 outfits per stage! I found that with my 3kids I was always short on the 6-9month clothes. Also, get a ton of 12mo-2T clothes! You will be shocked at how quickly time flies!!

I would probably say, 10-15 outfits per stage, or at least while they’re out growing them so fast. That allows for a weeks worth of 2 sets of clothes a day. Babies get changed all the time bc of spit-up, poop, etc. So I think that would be a reasonable amount of outfits. Good Luck
