Sewing Baby Patterns?

Posted under Baby Clothes Patterns by admin on Thursday 29 October 2009

I have so many cute ideas for decorations on baby clothes, but i have no patterns to make the actual clothes. Does anyone know where i can find free patterns to make baby onesies, dresses, shorts, overalls, etc???? :)

Kwik Sew sells a book with a number of basic patterns from birth to age two bound into the back. You trace off the size & pattern pieces that you want to use. I ended up with the baby, toddler, children, and swim suit pattern books for my own use (love the patterns). Their sizing reflects ready to wear and the pattern drafters don’t accidentally use the ease requirements for garments intended for adults (another company’s pattern for a size 2 toddler’s shorts, tank top, and baseball shirt ended up not really fitting my son until he was six – and he wasn’t THAT small for his age, running around the 55% to 60% percentile on the average growth chart).

Wild Ginger (www.wildginger.com) has a free pattern drafting program with some patterns sized for preemies – I don’t remember if it goes to larger sizes.

Martha Pullen has some heirloom sewing patterns (smocking, lace insertion, and embroidery) that are based on techniques used on clothes made for babies & children in the past – they are usually used for dressier events (christenings, photo shoots at various holidays, or because Grandma loves the techniques) in modern times.

Another option is to buy a baby garment at a thrift store or garage sale and carefully take it apart to make a pattern from it. Take notes on how you take it apart, then start at the last thing you did and reverse things to put a new garment together after. If it works well – trace it on paper to keep as a "master pattern" for yourself with notes on the direction of stretch, location of snaps or buttons, how many you need to cut of that pattern piece (two sleeves, one front, one back, two fronts for pants, etc.).

First birthday dress for a small baby?

My daughter is turning one in 6 weeks and is just starting to wear 6-9 months clothes, she is 50th percentile for height but not on the charts for weight…does any one have any suggestions, I looked online at personalized birthday dresses but they all start at 12 months…which will just fall off of her…
I guess I should say that I really one want that says birthday girl or one on it, I have been looking on ebay and they have some really cute personalized ones but they start at 12 months

Go to a bridal store…or like david’s bridal…they will have alot of kids dresses if you really want to go formal for her.

When you find out your pregnant when is it to soon to start buying baby clothes? OR picking out names?

I am talking about buying neutral colors.. Not really BOY items or GIRL items but yellows and neutral clothing. :)

You can start anytime. I started buying diapers really early like once a week from 12 weeks on just a few of each size so I didn’t have to worry about it when the baby comes you can also stock up on things like onesis and stuff thats under but you have to remember once you know its a little boy or girl your going to want to buy little blue and pink so don’t get to much now save some for the fun months when you know. I bought some yellow but when you see a little girl in yellow you’ll get lots a is that a boy or girl type questions that can get annoying :) So, its a personal perference and thats just my opion either way good luck and have a great pregnancy!
